Why WordPress
WordPress runs a large share of the web because it is flexible and lets owners edit their own content without calling a developer. Done well, it is an excellent choice for local businesses. Done badly, with a heavy theme and thirty plugins, it becomes slow, fragile and a target for hackers.
We build WordPress sites the careful way: a custom, lightweight theme, the block editor configured with only the blocks you need, and a short list of well-maintained plugins. The result is a site your team can update confidently and that stays fast years after launch.
Who it suits in and around Colchester
- Businesses that publish regularly. Restaurants changing menus, venues listing events, estate and letting agents adding properties, and anyone who wants a news or advice section that helps with SEO.
- Technical firms at the Knowledge Gateway and similar companies that need case studies, research summaries and team pages that several people edit. Our article on explaining technical work covers how to structure that content.
- Trades and suppliers on the Stanway and Tollgate estates who want a page per service and per area, managed from one place.
- Owners stuck with an old WordPress site that nobody can safely update. More on that below.
If you want the lowest-maintenance option and rarely change content, a static site or Shopify may suit you better, and we will say so.
What we do
| Service | What it involves |
|---|---|
| New WordPress builds | A custom theme designed for your business, built on the block editor |
| Editor setup | Reusable blocks and patterns, so new pages stay on brand |
| Migrations | Moving from Wix, Squarespace or an old WordPress setup, with redirects to protect rankings |
| Speed fixes | Image optimisation, caching, removing unused plugins and scripts |
| Security clean-ups | Removing malware after a hack, then hardening the site |
| Custom features | Booking forms, staff directories, property listings, member areas, WooCommerce shops |
A new WordPress build, step by step
- Discovery and content plan. What the site must do, who edits it and what types of content you publish: pages, posts, events, case studies, products.
- Content modelling. We decide which content needs its own structure. Events with dates and venues, for example, or team members with roles and photos. This is what makes a site easy to edit later.
- Design. Page layouts and a design system of colours, type and components, fitted to your brand.
- Theme build. A custom block theme with only the code you need. No page builder, no bundle of features you will never use.
- Editor configuration. Locked-down patterns so staff can add a new service page or event in minutes without breaking the layout.
- Plugins. A short, vetted list for forms, SEO, backups and security. Each one is there for a reason.
- Content entry and SEO. Pages loaded, titles and descriptions written, schema added and Search Console set up.
- Testing and launch. Speed, accessibility and device testing, then go-live with backups in place.
- Training and handover. A session for your team plus written notes on editing pages, adding posts and updating menus.
Rescues and fixes
A lot of Colchester businesses come to us with a WordPress site built years ago by someone who has since moved on. Nobody knows the login, the theme cannot be updated without breaking, and the site gets slower each year. Typical warning signs:
- Plugin or WordPress updates you are scared to press
- A page builder that takes ages to load in the editor
- Security warnings from your host or browser
- Pages that take several seconds to appear on a phone
We start by taking a full backup and making a copy of the site to work on, so nothing breaks while we investigate. Then we tell you whether fixing it in place or rebuilding makes more financial sense. Sometimes a few days of clean-up buys years of life. Sometimes the theme is so tangled that patching it costs more than starting again. If the answer is a rebuild, our website redesign process protects the rankings you already have.
How long it takes
- Speed or security fix: usually days rather than weeks, once we have access.
- Migration from another platform: two to six weeks depending on the amount of content.
- New custom WordPress site: typically six to ten weeks, depending on content and features.
What drives the cost
WordPress itself is free. What you pay for is design, development and care. The main drivers are:
- The number of page templates and custom content types
- Custom features and integrations, such as booking systems or CRM connections
- How much content needs moving or rewriting
- Whether an existing site needs cleaning up first
- Premium plugin licences, which renew yearly
- Ongoing web hosting, updates and backups, covered by our hosting and maintenance plans
We give a fixed quote for builds, and for rescues we quote an initial investigation first so you are not committing to an open-ended bill.
Common WordPress mistakes
- Buying a multipurpose theme. They load code for every possible feature and slow everything down.
- Adding a plugin for every small job. Each one is something else to update and another possible security hole.
- Shared admin logins. Everyone should have their own account with the right permissions.
- No backups off the server. If the host has a problem, backups on the same server go with it.
- Ignoring updates. Out-of-date plugins are the most common way small business sites get hacked.
- Cheap web hosting. A fast site on a slow server is still a slow site.
How we measure success
For a new build or rescue we track:
- Page speed and Core Web Vitals before and after
- Uptime and security scan results
- Search visibility and traffic to key pages
- Enquiries or sales from the site
- How easily your team can make changes, which we check after a few weeks of use
Handover
You get full admin access and ownership of the site, the domain and the content. It is your site. If you are in Wivenhoe or near the university, we are happy to meet in person for training. For a broader view of what a full build includes, see website design.
Ask about a WordPress project and tell us what is going on with your current site.
Questions we get asked
Is WordPress secure?
WordPress is secure when it is kept updated, uses a small number of well-maintained plugins and sits on good hosting. Most hacked sites we see have out-of-date plugins or themes.
Can you fix my slow WordPress site?
Usually, yes. We look at hosting, images, caching, plugins and the theme, then fix what is slowing it down or advise a rebuild if patching would cost more.
Do you use page builders?
No. We build custom block themes with patterns set up for your content, which keeps sites fast and stops layouts breaking when staff edit pages.
Can you move my site from Wix or Squarespace to WordPress?
Yes. We migrate the content, rebuild the design and set up redirects from old addresses so you keep the rankings you have earned.
Will I have full access to my WordPress site?
Yes. You get full admin access and ownership of the site, domain and content, plus training and written notes.
